We are still transitioning into a knowledge economy from the industrial age. Thus, the
engagement of the hearts and minds of employees is more important than ever to improve
performance and a sustainable competitive advantage. The old methods of the “carrot and
stick” are much less effective now. They contradict the intrinsic motivations and principles of
motivation that hold the key to long-term loyalty of employees. We all need an environment
that promotes trust, provides the appreciation and explanation of “why”, encourages high
standards without control, and encourages the freedom to experiment. “Carrot and stick”
approaches cannot create this type of environment. Unfortunately, many leaders are still
“addicted” to using this outdated control strategy. Learning and using the “new” assertiveness
leadership skill will avoid the unintended consequences of the industrial age management theory
and method.
Assertiveness is about being confident to ask for what you need and want to serve a higher
purpose. It is about getting what you need to do your job without treading on the rights or
respect of others. It is about standing up for your rights of respect while avoiding judgment or
unsolicited criticism.
In this highly interactive session, Wally Hauck explains why assertiveness is more important
than ever in our new knowledge economy. He explains how the century old practices are
slowly becoming obsolete under the new demands of the knowledge economy and what leaders
can do now to improve their assertiveness skills.
In this session participants will learn:
• Why control strategies will no longer create a competitive advantage
• The secrets of assertive leadership and how to create an environment of trust,
engagement, and innovation
• How trust and assertive leadership increases adaptability to change for individuals and
the entire organization
• Why assertiveness leadership skills must be learned by every leader and what a leader
can do to now to make it happen
